Ten youth each prepared and planted either hot peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, cucumbers, or potato container plantings to take home.

A September salsa-making workshop will be scheduled in the fall for the families to bring the separate ingredients together and prepare a community salsa. I will be a Junior and I hope to take back skills learned during my summer job. Together, we made six STEM activity kits and worked with a total of youth. Sandy would demonstrate how to do the STEM activities and explain what they had to do with real life. My job was to assist Sandy, help the kids, and lead opening activities.

I was glad to help with any task. The kids learned a lot. Any item could be used to make a STEM-related model or blueprint that could help the world and solve a potential problem. They also learned how to work as a team, fix problems and share ideas with one another to make their STEM models better. The Summer of Science, theme focused on engineering.

Some of the activities were challenging for the younger children, so we offered alternative activities. One of my favorites was the Ecobots activity. It was fun watching the kids try to figure out real life problems, understand how the problems affected them, and know that they could make a change in the world around them.
